So you are a great cook and you always wanted to do something from your home Kitchen? Then read this as there is no better time for you. There are some wonderful home chefs in Gurgaon who can anytime give commercial kitchens a run for their money. Only drawback that I see with them is that they need an advance order from couple of hours to a day, and some may only cater during the weekend. Home caterers otherwise can give a delicious, hygienic and fresh meal home delivered at a price either similar to or less than your favourite restaurant.

I love biryani’s by Smita Sabharwal and Gul Ali, unmatched besan loddoos and the Rajasthani stuff that Abhilasha Jain does in Gurgaon. Abhilasha also fills the void of dal-baati-choorma which is not available in any restaurant in Gurgaon. Similarly Smita also makes some amazing lal maas that again is a rarity in Gurgaon. The Mangalorean food by Deepa Kirodian and mutton devil by Remy Cruz (In a female dominated sector) is to die for. Some people tell me that Aditti Ahluwalia also does some great Mughlai dishes but I am yet to taste them. Jyoti Narang Watchmaker used to do some amazing Parsi dishes but she has recently moved to Mumbai. And if you are looking for authentic Bengali dishes, look no further. Jayita Sen Gupta, a Bengali, can serve any commercial kitchen to shame who would always be working on quantities and appealing to the masses taste buds.

Latest in my journey of culinary exploit of Mughlai cuisine is Sarah Rehman whose preparation I have tried earlier too and was in awe of her phirni. Gul Ali also does some amazing Mughlai dishes and together these Muslim ladies can churn out some fantabulous stuff. Since these are home preparations, some of the stuff you will never get to try unless you order from them. Like Kachri Keema served on pappey. Kachri is a wild cucumber and when mixed with keema, it can be a really healthy dish compared to other heavy gravy dishes that Mughlai cuisine offers. This is served with pappey (rusk) and has to be eaten like a bruschetta that was new experience for me. I enjoyed it with slivers of ginger, chopped chilly and onion.

malwani prawns by Deepa KirodianSarah’s amazing aloo-mutton salan and chicken korma along with taaftan that can any day satiate hunger for good Mughlai cuisine with sufficient portion size. Infact I have seen that home caterers are slightly heavy on the portion size. The attached portion size of pics of Sarah’s food are easily enough for 2-3 people since the dishes are really heavy. And if you think that Mughlai food is what makes you gain weight, then you haven’t really seen Sarah, Gul and their respective husband. Inspite of eating such food on a daily basis, these guys are really fit.

Am so glad that the trend of home caterers and home bakers is catching up in Gurgaon. Next time you are craving for delicious meal that you had on your travel to a state or one of your neighbours used to treat you, try the home caterers. More power to them!
