I’ve never been to the old Sundance Café, but I did visit the restaurant when it was called Che Grill & Bar. This restaurant which was a part of the Eros building was then a complete disappointment. Last week, I visited Café Sundance, the not-so-new continental restaurant that replaced Che Grill & Bar. I’ve heard from many that the former was amazing and served really pocket-friendly booze. It was more like a college hangout spot. But Café Sundance that was opened by the guys behind Two One Two caters to the working youth, or even older people. For the time I was at the restaurant; every table was occupied either by young couples or office goers.
To begin, we placed an order for a Long Island Iced Tea and a Manhattan. Both drinks were refreshing enough to bring a long tiring day at work to an end. Now it was time to concentrate on dinner. My friend and I decided to follow the ritual of starters-mains-dessert.
Among the starters, the BBQ Chicken Wings hogged all our attention. The BBQ sauce had a tinge of sweetness to it and the meat was tender. While the Mushroom puffs didn’t make it to our list, a vegetarian can look forward to this deep fried delicacy. If not, you can definitely opt for the Tomato and Basil Soup. This soup simply stands out with the robust flavours of tomato, basil leaves and pepper.
While the Barbeque Hotdog and the Pizzas were yet to arrive, I was skimming through the newspaper-like menu. I wasn’t quite fond of the concept behind this A3 sized menu, but what it comprised was interesting – soups, sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, risottos as well as salads. As we waited, the restaurant was clouded with fumes from the kitchen. We chose to ignore that after taking a bite of the Barbeque Dog. This hot dog, served with French fries in a cute little fryer, has the tendency to fire up your taste buds and as a chilly lover, I liked it.
The Quanttro Formaggi (Four Cheese Pizza) was oozing out with cheese. It was a wonderful combination of bread and cheese. On the other hand, the Cippolini Piccanti (Garlic Pizza) wasn’t quite impressive. There’s this one problem with thin crust pizzas – if you leave them long in the pan, they get soggy and difficult to handle. However, thumbs up to the four cheese pizza served here!
Then came two over-sized bowls – one with Hand Blended Pesto and the other with Risotto Primavera. The pasta was immersed in olive oil while the risotto kept up to its creamy nature. Sadly, I am not a fan of either of these dishes. The Blueberry Cheesecake was a let-down. It was more like a frozen chunk of cheese. The Chocolate Walnut cake, that felt like it was just out of the oven, melted in my mouth. And the hot cake coupled with vanilla ice-cream was a perfect ending.
Café Sundance gets quite noisy as the crowd sets in. However, you can groove to the seducing jazz music topping the playlist. The place is well lit, and is welcoming. Service is excellent and the waiter seems to know the menu thoroughly with menu description on the tip of their tongue. Impressive!
