Café Fresco located at Super Mart-1 is yet another small café however with a difference. It serves only vegetarian dishes in Italian, Thai, Chinese and Indian cuisine. The owner, Parul Singal, says “I always felt non-vegetarians are spoilt for choice in other restaurants while options for vegetarians are limited, hence this initiative”.
I started with French Onion soup (Rs160) which was very comforting in this rainy weather. The taste was good, however the cheese on the soup could have been baked for a little longer.. The Basil and cheese pizza (Rs 200) was nicely flavored but needed a little more crispness.
On the strong recommendation of the owner I tried the Mezze Platter (Rs 210). Small pieces of Falafel were excellent. Equally good was the hummus, sour cream and Pita bread. However the veggies that were soaked in water were still moist while they were inserted in the bread, making the pita bread go soggy. Tortellini Verde (Rs 280), a tortellini filled with hearty greens is a ring shaped pasta, but in café Fresco own version is a stuffed pasta which resembled ravioli. Made in white sauce and served with garlic bread, it was a complete meal for a person.
Shanghai fried rice (Rs 195) was made with five spices with a predominant flavor of star anise. I would have liked little more veggies in the dish.
My meal was over and I was still looking for a dish which scores a perfect ‘Ten’. Luckily I found that in my dessert, Chocolate Trufle (Rs75). A moist cake with an equal mix of Belbourne and Morde chocolate, it was a great way to end the meal.
Café Fresco may not offer a gourmet experience, but it still promises a satisfying and comforting meal.
