The new ‘galleria’ style mall ‘Baani Square’ catches attention, and with the ever growing population in nearby areas this mall will undoubtedly soon see some good footfall. The Chinese cum Thai eatery Big Wong is easy to notice in an otherwise relatively empty mall. So when the owner, Raghav mentions that they specialize in deliveries and take away, I immediately compare the concept of this small 12-seater restaurant to Pizza Hut Express which focuses on delivery but has a small seating for those looking for a quick bite.
There are over 15 verities of dimsum on offer and for a small restaurant, it is a refreshing addition. We started with a piece each of chicken siu mai, crystal chicken and black pepper. The chicken in all dimsum was nicely cooked and was as juicy as it should be, however the casing could not hold. So even though the dimsum tasted good, it failed to appeal aesthetically. The vegetarians are surely in for a good time with innovative veg pizza dimsum and veg cheese roll (Rs 31 each).
Moving on to the starters, Konjee Crispy Lamb (301) is crisp to the core and my friend finishes it to the last bite. This Konjee is different to congee that is a kind of rice porridge. Konji is more of an Indian innovation like Manchurian and means dry and crispy. If you have liked Wasabi Prawns (331) at Bercos, you will enjoy them here as well. For me the wasabi hit was missing while the slivers of almond provided much needed bite.
For the main course, Thai red curry and green curry failed to satisfy the foodies in us. Served with a green chilly on top, devoid of Thai aromatic flavors –kaffir lime & lemon grass, and with absence of any veggies, this dish is more like butter chicken in coconut milk.
The owner is receptive to feedback. So while this visit is just above average, I am sure we will soon see the new improved Big Wong.
