It’s been over a week since I visited this place and the memories are still as fresh as it was yesterday. Was it the company or was it the food or perhaps it was a combination of both that made this visit so memorable? Located inside One India Bulls, this place may not ring much of a bell, but as a new entrant to the restro-lounge scene in Mumbai, D’Bell certainly has what it takes to make it one of the “Go To” places in town.
The place is divided into two sections, a sombrely coloured café section and a lounge section with darker interiors and a matching ambience. As we had gone for an early dinner, we decided to dine in the café sections and were attended quite diligently by the waiting staff.
After a quick introduction, we were brought our starter course of Bacon Wrapped Chicken Involtini (Rs.290), Hummus Platter (Rs. 285), Wasabi Prawns (Rs. 340) and Corn Cigar rolls (Rs. 200). The Involtini was quite good with tangy chicken pieces wrapped in Bacon, though I wished the bacon was crispier; all in all it was quite an acceptable dish. The hummus platter was interesting with three different kinds of hummus dips served with lavash, focaccia, pita and breadsticks, the wasabi prawns with a mild wasabi sauce were good and corn cigars average (the oily texture was a bit of a put off). All this was polished off with a sweet kick of D’ Bells Signature Sangria (Rs. 400), a refreshing, fruity and sweet drink.
Amidst Incessant laughter and whacky anecdotes, we ordered our mains. While the vegetarians on the table went for an Eggplant Canneloni (Rs. 280) and a Tofu and noodle salad (Rs.250), I went for a Pepper Crusted Grilled beef steak (Rs. 350) and my friend a portion of the Teriyaki Salmon (Rs. 550).The Eggplant cannelloni was cheesy gooey goodness on a plate, quite delightful and delicious to the eyes and the palate at the same time. The Tofu salad was interesting with some crispy soba noodles, gari, silky tofu and fresh lettuce, very simple, very clean flavours. The teriyaki salmon was nicely done, the fillet was juicy and tender but I felt that the teriyaki sauce was a bit too dense and it didn’t go very well with the side of garlic fried rice. The star of the table however, was undoubtedly the steak. I had asked the server to make sure my steak was done medium and was gratified to see the steak done exactly the way I had asked. The tender juicy melt in my mouth steak was well balanced by the mild pepper crust, the roast garlic and peppercorn sauce and the side of creamy mashed potatoes.
We were also served some desserts that were not a part of the usual menu, but the chef was kind enough to bring for us to round off our meal. The soft and light flavours of the gulab jamun parfait and the chocolate mousse cake were perfect to end the meal on a high note.
The gratifying company of our host, the delicious spread on the table, the interesting drinks on the side, a lovely ambience and a very diligent and attentive staff is what has stayed back as memory of this experience at D’Bell. For the residents of Lower Parel and neighbouring area, there is no further need to chase happiness as it is right at your heels at this friendly neighbourhood joint.
