The food scenario in India has made a Dynamic shift in the past 5 years. Earlier where party catering was focused on traditional North –Indian. Chinese and Live Pasta counter buffets, they are now venturing into the lesser known food territories such as Mexican, American barbecue, Japanese, European and more. Some caterers are also delving into nontraditional regional cuisines to bring that extra oomph to their offerings.
One such catering company in Mumbai is Silverspoon Gourmet, owned and operated by the husband-wife duo of Chef Joshua D’Souza and Neha Manekia. Specializing in modern European cuisine, they do manage quite a wide repertoire of other cuisines as well. I have previously had the opportunity to use their services for a personal event where I was quite satisfied by the food they produced.
Taking the catering business even further, Silverspoon Gourmet has now launched a new concept at their new location in Lower Parel, where the core idea would be to bring the guests to the kitchen rather than taking the kitchen to the guests. The place can also be used by a romantic couple wanting to have a candle light dinner in a very private surrounding and enjoy of high end gourmet cuisine; or by a group of friend hosting a reunion dinner or similar event and want to use the space for themselves without disturbing the other patrons of the place; or even by corporates hosting small private luncheons or networking events. Each event will be customized as per the patron´s requirements and will provide 5 star fine dining experience in a very private elegant setting of the Silverspoon premises.
The preview event was a snapshot of things to come and was done with a Mary Poppins theme complete with the magical umbrellas et al. Neha had spread out a table with shortbread cookies and many candylicious toppings to encourage the guests to create a work of art. Joshua had whipped up an interesting menu which included several vegetarian delights apart from the usual non vegetarian ones. His creativity and focus on high quality gourmet reflects in the dishes I tried during the evening.
Amongst the most interesting vegetarian things I tried at their place, was a bite sized Pumpkin Gnocchi in butter, herbs and chillies; a Potato Rosti with Smoked Veggies where he had used mesquite wood chips to smoke the veggies, giving them a mellow smoky aroma. Of the non-vegetarian courses, I loved the Bacon and caramelized onion cheese tarts which had sweet onions and bacon in a flaky cheesy tart casing and then the Shepherd’s Pie which was a tad bit over in butter but at the same time quite delicious. Desserts line up was quite decent too with usuals like bread pudding, fruit custard etc. but my favorite was the Chocolate Coated Green Apple on a stick.
Mumbai food freaks must keep this new concept in mind, the next time they plan a night out with friends and if they want to get a taste of it, head to Silverspoon on the 19th of April when Joshua plans to do a 8 course cheese based meal event where he will use an extensive curated cheese line up and give a cooking demo as well.
I think it is quite an interesting option of dining out with friends in a prime area of South Mumbai. If only the access roads to the place were a bit easier, I would surely host many a social events out there under the expert supervision of the dynamic duo of Neha and Joshua. I believe this could be the beginning of a completely new trend in eating out and It would be interesting to see how many spinoffs of this concept mushroom up in the times to come.
