Given double income nuclear families, Gurgaon has a huge potential for home delivery. No doubt that even the best of restaurants wants to focus on the category which has a big impact on their bottom line. As a resident of Gurgaon, I still find that either the home delivery options is expensive or does not offer food that can impress me or my guests.
I am told about Leaping Caravan, an only home delivery service that does not have any establishment. It is owned by Megha Tuli who has studied at Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne (EHL) in Switzerland and worked with Hyatt and Oberois, and her partner Shamsher Singh Mann is ex ITC. Given their impressive background and claim that they have recipes that have been passed on from generations, I decided to check it out.
Leaping Caravan is a home delivery brand with select dishes chosen from the Grand Trunk (GT) road covering food from Kolkata, Awadh, Delhi, Amritsar and Kabul. Not too keen on the starters so apart from bhutte da kebab from Amritsar, my focus this time remained on main course from Delhi.
Atari Bhutte Da Kebab (Rs 180) is a usual preparation which is good without impressing. But I loved the butter chicken gravy. For Rs 225 for half portion, it is very competitively priced. I love the smoky aroma along with flavour of deseeded green chilly. I wish the chicken is cooked a tad less; this one is a bit dry. Not to be missed is the Railway chicken curry (Rs 225). Spicy, thin and homely gravy is brilliant and goes well with both tawa roti and steamed rice.
I have had sukha mutton from South. This version of dry-ish mutton (Rs 250) is equally good sans the coconut. The meat is tender and portion size enough for two if accompanied with another dish.
In vegetarian dishes, Dal Makhani (Rs 130) is creamy and addictive and I find the mushroom keema masala (200) an interesting take on soya masala. My family who is vegetarian licked it to the last bite.
Kheer (Rs 50) is the only disappointment in the entire meal. A gooey mix, it is nowhere which a good kheer should be. We all loved the ghee shakkar ki roti (Rs 50) which I had as a kid. Sheer Nostalgia!
The service is prompt with a sms information as to when the order is taken, expected time of delivery and later followed up with the status when the order is dispatched. Packing is good and also has rhododendron-tulsi tea bag for washing down the stuff. I must say that for the pricing that is less than most dhabas in Gurgaon and quality better than many restaurants, it will surely see much more of me.
