Seldom does a grown up man feel as excited as a small kid, but that’s exactly how I felt last Sunday when I went to review the new brunch offering at the Powai branch of Haagen Dazs !
The restaurant, famous for its wonderful ice creams, has recently launched a very aggressively priced brunch menu which offers a combination of crepes or waffles and ice creams with coffee, chocolate or shakes.
We tried the Nutty Sunshine platter which had crepes drizzled with a caramel sauce. The crepes were amazingly soft and luscious and had a perfect sweet and salt balance. We paired it with crème brulee ice cream.. The ice cream was served in a small waffle cup which was not too sweet and held its shape throughout without getting soggy. The crepes were lined with pieces of bananas which made the platter as sinful as it gets.
Similarly, our other platter of Waffles and Ice Cream was equally as balanced in its sweetness. This platter of Belgian waffles was paired with smokey cappuccino truffle and strawberry cheesecake ice creams. The waffles had a chocolate fudge sauce as its toppings and some very light and airy whipped cream on the side. This was a platter which was pure sinful decadence.
A lot of thought and planning seems to have gone into creating this menu as the drinks paired with the brunch combos complement the platters quite well. The Belgian mocha which goes with the crepes was one of the best mochas I have had in recent times – a lovely balance of coffee and chocolate.
Café Affogato which came with the waffles was an espresso shot served on Hazelnut ice cream. It was a very interesting marriage of strong bitter espresso mixed with soft, sweet and nutty hazelnut ice cream – an apt accompaniment to the waffles platter.
What I loved about the place was the attention to details, right from the biscotti served with the beverages to the whipped cream served as a side on the platters. Further, despite the aggressive pricing of Rs.350 to Rs.420 for these brunch combo platters, each portion size is sufficiently big enough to be shared by two. I think this would be a great value proposition for people in a hurry and give them an opportunity to try many other goodies that the place seems to offer without it becoming too taxing to the pocket.
As a parting note, I must congratulate the management for a very well trained and polite staff which, in fact, is a rarity these days. It is definitely a go to place to enjoy a sinful, decadent and lazy weekend afternoon!
