Located just off the main Golf Course Road in Gurgaon but still away from the city’s hustle and bustle, the new world cuisine restaurant ‘Impromptu’ boasts of a beautiful al fresco setting apart from equally comfortable covered seating. I am here with my wife and two lovely daughters to celebrate Women’s Day.
This is the same place where the beautiful Chinese restaurant Jing used to be and with minor changes made by new owners, the look is better and greener. We decide to use the open area before summer sets-in and enjoy the retro music in the background. The lamps shaped as jars are nicely done and catches attention. The menu is compact but still makes an attempt to qualify as a world cuisine restaurant.
We start with the shakes – Mango Thandai is an interesting twist to the usual thandai while banana shake has crunch from peanut chikki and the sweetness of caramel completes the drink. Priced competitively at Rs. 145 each, these are a must order on your visit. Paneer Tikka holds my interest even though I am a non vegetarian and never enjoy paneer starters given the bland rubbery texture which most of the restaurant comes up with. It’s refreshingly different here; the pieces are sized right which holds the flavor even in the middle and the good quality of paneer ensures a great product.
The Shitake Rolls are a kind of spring rolls but filled with shitake mushroom and my kids love them with the sambhal mayo served along with. My vegetarian family is on a roll when they see pastas with a twist. Both Hara Pyaaz Pasta and Soyabean Pasta are an interesting fusion and my wife happily announces that she would definitely like to try them at home. The Veg Fire Cracker Burger is spicy and has a crunchy coating with veggies inside the patty. If we were not four of us, I could have had an entire meal of just these burgers.
Though I did not try their lunch buffet which is attractively priced at Rs. 599, it is important to make a mention of it. It has 6 starters, three each of veg and non veg, plus a spread of salads and some live preparations along with the dessert counter.
Do not, I repeat do not, miss the interestingly named dessert, Avatar. It is a fresh fruit truffle with rabdi and balushahi crumble and is served with roasted nuts. This dessert is unique to Impromptu and could have gone either ways – been a hit or a miss. Happy that it touched the right chord!
There are few kid friendly places in Gurgaon. Impromptu not only qualifies as one but with its beautiful, laid back exteriors, it can also be a great spot for romantic couples. The huge space will ensure that one get his privacy. I am waiting for it to get the bar license and that is when I would like to revisit here with my friends for a relaxed evening.
