Mumbai keeps being compared to New York. Here is another one to add to the list of similarities. Breakfast on the go! Desi Deli has come up with this concept for the energetic joggers and cyclists, lazy bachelors and busy yuppies (and oldies like me). Each of their Breakfast On The Go (BOTG) are power packed meals by themselves served in a glass or as a sandwich. Couple those with a milk shake and you are ready to face the world and fight some demons too on the way!
I started with the smoothies rather than the tea or coffee. Call it my Parsi quirkiness but I have tea only made by myself or made my way! I must mention that there was the Temi Tea and Cappuccino and
Organic Coffees too. But the delectable combination of ingredients in the milk shakes and smoothies sure had me trying more than one. I felt like a connoisseur tasting wines! I tried the Shake Your Date milkshake; loaded with the sweet caramelly taste of the dates, it was one creamy number. That one could shake any one out of lethargy. Another smoothie that my son tried was a Strawberry and White Chocolate milkshake. It is a classic combination that works all the time and makes you want for more. Not too good on the waist I am sure but sure felt great on the palate. I tried the Chilled Chocolate on recommendation. It was a chocoholic’s delight but for me the chocolate was too bitter and even the sweetness from the fruits could not cut it. Next one was Good Morning; a banana and citrus smoothie which had this jolt of freshness that put you in instant feel-good state. The Spiced Papaya smoothie with its flavours was for the quirky ones who like a bit of new with the old. It is definitely a must try. But the smoothie that can put you into absolute health-food Zen would be the Kalimera; yogurt, nuts & oats smoothie. That one there is pure ambrosia.
Apart from their usual breakfast combo called the Full Desi that comes with a cereal, a main, a shake/smoothie and tea or coffee, they have some usual suspects on the menu too. The Brekky Dog; chicken sausage with scrambled eggs, house ketchup and garlic mushrooms was pleasant but would have done better with some relish, caramelised onions and mustard too. I like my dogs old-school. The Arepa; Venezuelan wrap with paneer, salsa verde and salad was a wholesome meal but needed some more seasoning and the verde to give it a bit more zing. The Wahwah Brekky, in veg and non veg versions, is BOTG that comes in a take away glass too. It is loaded with all those things mom would make on your visit home; Oats, scrambled eggs, sausage and gravy (replaced by mushrooms in the vegetarian one), spinach, white sauce and buttermilk biscuit topped with a nut scattered bacon praline. If there was a conqueror of the world breakfast – this was it! A must try for sure!
And of all the things over there I was totally floored by the Buttermilk Biscuits they use as bases. If you can cop a few extras, go for it. They are melt-in-your-mouth, crunchy, delightful little morsels.
In the end I can say while Desi Deli will not make me change my address, I will surely drop in if I was in the neighbourhood and needed a huge breakfast! Nothing like an all-out brekky for a hangover, is it?
