When a favourite song plays over and over in your head, you know the atmosphere is already made for a great night! I entered Skyy and the first song that came to mind was Nelly Furtado’s Night is Young. The open to sky restaurant with its tables between the artificial water bodies, full moon, live music, open bar at one end and see-through kitchen at another, with the smell of lovely food wafting around and pleasant smiling waiters was as near as one would get to a perfect night. Just on the ambience, I would strongly recommend this place for a date. But ah wait! The food is equally good too .. so make it a great night out with foodie-friends too!
We started with two gorgeous cocktails; Mandarin Mojito made with mandarin juice, Bacardi, orange juice and muddled mint, and Passionfruit Vodkatini made with passion fruit syrup, Vodka, lemon and sugar syrup;plain simple flavours blended so beautifully that they set the tone for the evening. We started with Chicken Wonton Soup which was loaded with flavoursome chicken, basil and spring onion wantons. Next on the menu was Yum Talay; seafood salad. It was loaded with the most succulent poached prawns, squid, crab and fish with its sweet, tangy, spicy dressing. Next was a starter called Ca Nuong; Vietnamese styled grilled fish served with crusted peanuts, tamarind dip, honey soy bean sprouts. It was fresh but I wish they had used a more flavourful fish rather than Basa. Next starter was Gai Phad Pratiem Prik Thai; crispy chicken tossed with garlic and black pepper sauce. Though the chicken was not crispy, this was a simple delicious dish.
For mains, we tried the Pork Chilli Basil and Phad Kee Mao; flat veg rice noodles in dark soy sauce with vegetables and chillies. The former, served with rice and a runny yolk fried egg was a burst of flavours. The veg noodles were delicately spiced with herbs. Both were a sumptuous meal in their own right.
For desserts we had Tub Tim Krob; sweetened coconut milk with Pandan sauce and water chestnuts. This, though an acquired taste, worked quite well as a superb ending to the spicy flavourful food.
In the end I can only say that with every morsel we were transported to the small streets of Thailand and Vietnam. The food seemed as authentic as any thatwe had tasted there and rightly so when we found out that our chef, Simanchal Sabat, had not only trained in these countries but had also lived there for a while honing his skills.
