It can be said without a doubt that The Leela, Mumbai has one of the most beautiful properties in Mumbai. Sitting at its poolside cosmopolitan bar, 6 Degrees, one can enjoy the onset of the whatever little winter Mumbai has to offer – the walk through sheer opulence to the bar, the mellow lights amidst the lush palm growing around, the beautiful fountain – all of it have the promise of a lovely winter. The purpose of my visit to was to experience the grills which were the highlight of the Barbeque Evenings being hosted by the hotel at 6 Degrees.
The inviting aroma of the live barbeque greeted us as we were shown to our table by the very warm and hospitable staff; the music piping at very acceptable decibels added to the ambience. Relaxing amidst the serene green of the tall palms and blue of the pool, a glass of Suzy Wong in hand, my appetite was revved for the tasting.
The menu said that there is an a la carte barbeque on offer, but the special for the evening were the platters – rather, an eat all you can menu which offers soup, breads, salads, meat or seafood platters and desserts.
The salads that arrived at the table were classy but hearty, fresh and delicious. I particularly liked the German Potato Salad with Cornichon. I would have preferred more greens in the salad section though.
The bowl of corn soup was warm and wholesome and tasty; full of flavour, I ate it to the last drop.
A walk to the spread at the live counter revealed quite a good spread of fish, decent sized prawns and squids found their place among the Norwegian Salmon and Red Snapper. Not bad at all! For one’s platter, one can choose some grilled seafood – choices being among Fresh Catch Of The Day, Norwegian Salmon Steak, Tiger Prawns, Black Pomfret, Calmari; with/or Meats – choose among Chicken Breast (wonderfully done with thyme & mustard), Lamb Steak, Pork Chops, Pork Sausages.
I liked the Lamb and Chicken Satay that were served with my Meat and Seafood combo platter. And yes, the Vegetables that accompany the grills are absolutely fresh and cooked to perfection and have a slight crunch for texture –loved that!
The desserts followed – a chocolate brownie which was divine, and two layered cakes.
To sum it all up, I can easily say that the ambience and the eat-all-you-can concept with food of superb quality is certainly a winning combination. The steep price tag of INR 3250 plus taxes, that too without any drinks, could prove a little kink in the delightful armour though. If the hotel could restructure the price, or make it more attractive by adding some liquor into the menu, then the Barbeque Evenings at 6 Degrees would be a sure shot winner all the way!
