Delicious Crabs at Wai Yu Mun Ching, Gurgaon

If you remember my post sometime ago, I accidentally turned up at Holiday Inn, Aerocity and tasted the Louisiana Seafood Boil. I met Ashish Seth there who was doing a pop up at Holiday Inn and mentioned that his brother owns a small Chinese/Asian restaurant at Gurgaon called Wai Yu Mun Ching. Of course I had eaten there multiple times without knowing about the ownership. Ashish also mentioned that he would be doing his delicious crabs at that outlet till he was in town.

Craving for the sweet flavours of those decently big sized mud crabs, I along with Bhawna, Poonam, S Jayanti and Anurag reached Wai Yu Mun Ching (the same day that Gurgaon witnessed a hailstorm) for another delicious meal. The outlet though much bigger than earlier is still small but quite comfortable. And even though service isn’t their forte as yet, they made up much more with the brilliant food.

We started with something that they call spiritual potatoes (Rs449). I had this at the beginning of seafood boil as well. Lightly fried potatoes dipped in coconut milk broth. An unusual combination but very tasty. We followed this with sizzling kaythong chicken soup (Rs240). Instead of ordering the full portion, we shared three soups between the five of us. As they say soup always becomes more if you share 😜. This is a take on Manchow soup where they have not used dark soy and instead of fried noodles have used rice puffs for the crunch.

Normally Bali prawns (Rs699) have a cornflake crumb but here it is more of the spicy sauce and none of that crunch. Full marks to the taste though.

Next came the Chow Chu fish fingers (Rs699). This dish is spicy as hell. But you have one bite, you will feel the heat but you still won’t be able to resist the next bite. I believe they wanted to mention Cha Chu style where typically prawns are dipped in egg white and fried after dipping in corn flour and cooked with green chillies. Not withstanding the name, this dish was unanimously loved by all of us.

Squid salt and pepper (Rs550) were excellently cooked and Oyster chicken (499) came tossed with a variety of mushrooms.

So far a great meal but as they say save best for the last. Two medium sized mud crabs, almost a kilogram each in Singaporean pepper sauce saw us shutting up and focusing on the food and that too without the aprons or enough crab cutters as they were at Holiday Inn for the pop up. Hopefully they are in stock now. These Singapore pepper crabs (Rs3700/kg) had enough meat and punch. They came with fried rice that we polished with an amazing spicy sauce. However I enjoyed the sweet crab meat flavours on its own.

There aren’t any desserts on the menu. We simply crossed the road to enjoy Gopala rasgulla which aren’t as great as they used to be.

Good sized crabs are expensive. I was checking the online price of similar sized mud/ Srilankan crabs which comes at around Rs3000/kg minus the online discount. So if someone has priced them at Rs3700/kg cooked and served at a restaurant, it is very fairly priced. Hopefully we will revisit the place till Ashish is continuing with his pop up in Gurgaon.
